Re:The economic crisis

Is it not counterproductive for governments to spend billions and billions of dollars stimulating their economies in order to keep people working, while companies are trying to survive by eliminating thousands and thousands of jobs?

Instead of firing or laying off employees, why aren't companies opting for shorter weeks in order to spread the work out for more workers? Why aren't governments legislating shorter workweeks?

Surely by keeping more of us working and spending, such strategies would indeed stimulate and revive our stalling economies.

Cut overtime and implement work share. Good ideas. Companies can retain experienced people and although there would be some belt tightening, when things pick up everyone benefits. I found one of the most demoralizing thing was seeing co-workers laid off. It has a ripple effect on moral especially when there is a great team.
